Was wondering just now exactly when I started to draw myself as I do now, which lead me to this! 2009-2018 self-drawing evolution

Don’t be afraid to use references or to sketch. For the longest time I did neither, no refs because I thought that meant I was a bad artist for having to look up how to draw something and no sketches because I only wanted to draw clean lines.
